Vehicle Description Beautiful 1957 Corvette. Two tops. Date-correct 283 with dual quads. Late production car with 4-speed manual transmission. Converted to front wheel disc brakes, otherwise stock. New www radials. A gorgeous Corvette ready to enjoy on the road!
1957 was obviously a very good year at Chevrolet, and today their cars from that year are some of the most highly sought collectors' items of all. For the Corvette, it was the final year of the single headlights, a look that many enthusiasts prefer. The clean lines, dramatic side cove, and curvaceous trunk all make the '57 Corvette a stylistic homerun. Add in the fact that they're also fine road cars with more-than-adequate performance and you get a hobby car that's going to make onlookers smile as much as the driver. This particular 1957 Corvette wears a beautiful color combination of Onyx Black with Inca Silver side coves with a red vinyl interior, and the result is just stunning in person. The restoration is a few years old now, but it has been a beloved member of the family and as a result still shows extremely well. There's a deep shine to the black paint, the fiberglass substrate doesn't show any signs of distress in the usual areas, and the doors fit quite well, all hallmarks of careful work. From any angle, this is a great-looking Corvette!
The only proper interior for a black and silver Corvette is bright red, which offers a brilliant contrast and a classic look. Correctly restored with patterned seat covers and door panels, a twin cockpit dashboard, and that familiar 3-spoke steering wheel, it looks like a Corvette should look. It's also quite comfortable once you're situated behind the wheel, although the driving position is much more '50s race car than modern car-the wheel will be a little closer than you're used to. The cue ball shifter knob for the 4-speed transmission falls easily to hand and the almost delicate lever snaps through the gears without much muscle required. All the gauges are operational, although we suspect the fuel gauge isn't very accurate. There's also a familiar AM radio in the dash which, sadly but not surprisingly, is not working. Correct carpets are fitted along with matching floor mats for protection. There's a black canvas convertible top, a nice change from the usual vinyl, and this car includes the optional removable hardtop which has been painted and trimmed to match. 1957 Corvettes also offer a reasonably spacious trunk with the spare tire stashed underneath, making it a great car for a weekend getaway.
The engine is a date-code correct 283 cubic inch V8 with a 3731548 casting number, so they did their homework to get the right motor back in the car during the restoration. It was rebuilt to 270 horsepower specs and topped with dual 4-barrel carburetors, and runs extremely well. It's not at all fussy and fires up easily with just a few pumps of the throttle to prime the carbs. It has a pretty good idle, although for 1957, this was a high performance engine so it's no Impala motor. Once it's properly warmed up, it accelerates cleanly through all four gears and dipping into the second carburetor introduces a noticeable surge of power. It's also correctly detailed with Chevy Orange paint, finned air cleaners, and cast aluminum 'Corvette' valve covers that look awesome. You'll also note the original ignition shields are still in place, and there's an upgraded fan to help keep things cool. Little stuff like the hoses and clamps and various fittings are likewise correct. The 4-speed manual shifts cleanly and has reasonable clutch action, so it's a snap to run it through the gears and with 3.70 gears out back, it's plenty quick off the line. For a vintage Corvette, ride quality is pretty good thanks to a recent front-end rebuild and front disc brakes have been fitted to improve stopping power. There's a mellow-sounding dual exhaust system that has just the right burble on the overrun and it sits on 205/75/15 whitewall radials for a period-perfect look and modern handling.
Documentation includes an original owner's manual.
Beautifully finished, nicely sorted, and from long-term ownership, this '57 is the right Corvette to own if you like to drive. With a few nice upgrades, it's just delightful on the road and nothing attracts attention better than a '57 Corvette at full song. Just a wonderful car from a quality collection, ready to enjoy.
